I chose to feature Gunta Stölzl for this project, because she was a fiber artist and fiber is my first love, creatively speaking. I found this amazing picture of her as a girl posing at her communion. I love how she’s holding the candle as if it’s a sword, symbolizing her strength, and also the light she held up to the world. I used this image, as well as a tapestry she created, for my inspiration.
I printed the tapestry image onto a piece of muslin fabric, then hand embroidered an outline based on the communion photo.
I scanned in the embroidery, corrected the colors in Photoshop, then brought it into Illustrator. In Illustrator I created a brush mask for the image, then added my typography. I chose the theme “life is art is life” based on her philosophies.
